5 Things To Do To Celebrate Autumn Equinox And Mabon

Autumn leaves with a sign that says autumn is my favorite color

As the leaves begin to change and the air cools, we find ourselves at the threshold of the Autumn Equinox, also known as Mabon for some witches. This is a sacred time of balance when day and night are equal, and we can take a moment to honor the shifting of the seasons.

Mabon is a celebration of the harvest, both literally and spiritually. It’s a time for us to reflect on the seeds we’ve sown throughout the year, and to give thanks for the abundance—whether it’s in our relationships, career, health, or spiritual growth.

5 Simple Solitary Witchcraft Practices for Autumn Equinox / Mabon

Here are five ways you can connect with the energy of Mabon and mark this important seasonal transition as a solitary witch:

Harvest Altar

Create an altar dedicated to the harvest. Decorate it with apples, squash, corn, and seasonal herbs like rosemary and sage. Adding a small dish of salt can represent the earth, while candles represent the fading light of the sun. Use this altar as a space for reflection and gratitude.

Gratitude Ritual

Write down three things you are grateful for from this past year. Focus on the abundance you've received—both physical and emotional. Then, under the light of a candle, meditate on these blessings, offering thanks to the Universe or your chosen deities. You can burn the paper afterward to send your gratitude into the cosmos.

Nature Walk and Foraging

Take a solitary walk in nature, and collect fallen leaves, acorns, and other natural items. These can be used to decorate your home, altar, or be added to spells for protection and abundance. While walking, meditate on the balance of life and the cycles of nature.

If you're unable to take time in nature, sit at an open window where you can feel some sunlight on your skin. Close your eyes and listen to the sounds of your surroundings. Do you hear birds, the wind, crunching of leaves as people and vehicles pass over them? What do you smell? Even when I was living in the city, the seasons had a distinct smell to them as the city morphed from summer activities to autumn. Sometimes I could smell the earthy scent of the leaves and things decaying. How does the sun feel on your skin? And lastly, open your eyes and take notice of the sights. What does the autumn sunlight look like to you? Can you see any changes to the scenery around you that indicates a change in seasons?

Candle Magic for Balance

On the Equinox, perform a simple candle ritual using a white and black candle to symbolize balance. Light both candles, focusing on the areas of your life that may need more harmony. Speak aloud your intention to bring balance into your life, then extinguish them simultaneously, honoring the equality of the day.

Autumn Cleansing Bath

Prepare a warm bath with Epsom salts, Evening Primrose petals, and essential oils like cinnamon or clove. As you soak, reflect on what you need to release to make space for new opportunities. Let the water cleanse not only your body but also your spirit, preparing you for the darker half of the year.

As we move deeper into the Autumn season, remember that it is a time for introspection, balance, and gratitude. Whether you’re performing a ritual or simply lighting a candle, take a moment to connect with the changing energy around you.

Wishing you a magical and balanced Autumn Equinox!
